What is quarantine?
At this time, surely you have already heard about it. Currently, we are facing a tremendous challenge globally. I think, if I am not mistaken, that it is the greatest challenge that we have had to live as humanity in the modern era.
Of course, I’m talking about Coronavirus. A disease that has come to cause anguish, fear and above all many deaths. It is for this reason that many governments have found themselves in the dilemma of having to order quarantines for their entire population to keep it safe.
But what is being quarantined? Although it may not seem like it, many people confuse this term with isolation.
Being quarantined means that we must stay away from other people even if we are not sick or have symptoms to avoid getting infected.
On the other hand, isolation occurs when we already carry the disease and we must isolate, so that we are not the ones who infect other people. In the case of Coronavirus, as it is a disease that has taken us by surprise and we do not know who is now infected, quarantine measures took place in many parts of the world.
This means that, for a period of time, we must be at home locked up without leaving. Unless, it is for essential reasons such as going to the doctor, the pharmacy or getting food. Although, the workers of some companies can continue working, the rest of us must stay at home.
So, what to do on those days of “involuntary vacation”? How to reduce anxiety and depression? Well, nothing better than looking for activities to spend time. After all, this is a unique opportunity that life gives us to spend with family and reconnect as human beings.
Activities to do while quarantined
In this article, I am going to give you 10 examples of activities you can do with your family while quarantined. As I said in the quote of the day, at the beginning of this article, we have to try to see the positive at times like these.
The daily routine such as work, studies and even social networks gradually distanced us from our loved ones. The hours of the day are no longer enough to spend time with the family and reconnect with them. When we get home, the time goes by preparing dinner, doing chores, taking care of the home, bathing and going to bed to face the next day that is more of the same.
Well, ironic and unfortunate as it may seem, this quarantine is the only opportunity we have to enjoy our family. For this, nothing better than doing it with activities that promote family interaction. Below I list 10 of them.
Reading while quarantined
One of the things we can do in our spare time is to read. From my personal experience, for a long time I do not take a book in my hands for the same reason that I explained earlier, lack of time. Well, this is the best time to resume reading.
What’s more, if you have other family members living with you who like to read, you can invent a family book club. Choose a book, read it together and then you all can take an hour of the day to exchange opinions on what is read. This will not only help you interact, but will also nurture the intellect.
Organize the home
Another thing we can do with this free time is organize our home. Be it closets, kitchen cabinets, rooms, etc. In a house, there is always something to organize.
This activity can be done as a family. For example, everyone can organize a part of the house. So the task is not so tedious and it is done quickly. Not to mention that, it keeps us active and entertained. On YouTube and Pinterest, you can find inspirational videos or boards, both to organize and decorate. So let’s get to work.
Gardening while quarantined
Depending on the country where you live and the season of the year you are, gardening is another option to do while quarantined. It also depends a lot on how strict the quarantine is in your country. If you are totally locked up, it wouldn’t do you much good.
However, if you have plants inside the house, you can also take care of them. Here in the United States, for now there is no mandatory quarantine in the city where I live. So, I can take advantage and do some gardening around the house.
Of course, being very careful, using protection and above all practicing “social distance”. YouTube and Pinterest are your best allies to take gardening ideas.
DIY – Manual projects
If you like crafts, this is the best time to practice it. Above all, it is an activity that you can enjoy as a family. You can take a certain time of day and meet in an area of the house so you can make your own crafts.
For this type of activity, Pinterest is ideal. On this platform, you can find all kinds of crafts, from the simplest to the most elaborate. You can even use this moment to give a new look to some ornaments of your decoration.
One thing that has greatly affected this quarantine is being able to go to the gym to exercise. Many people get frustrated, by the fact that they are removed from their routine. But, this is not a problem. We simply have to adapt to the new times.
The fact of not being able to go to the gym, does not mean that we can’t exercise daily. Instead, you can choose to do some of the exercises you did in the gym at home. For example, you can walk around the house, either indoors or outdoors.
You can use heavy objects, if you don’t have weights, and lift them. But above all, you can search for exercise videos so you can follow your daily routine. One of the channels I recommend and use is Blogilates. It offers training videos for beginners as well as the most expert. There is no excuse for not exercising.
Family games are one of the hobbies, most liked, especially children. There are games of all kinds and colors and for all ages. Some are classic, like the Monopoly and others are very new and interactive.
The important thing is to unite the family and spend a pleasant time. If you have elderly family members at home, I recommend opting for the Bingo . It is not that complicated for them and believe me, they will have a great time. We have it at home and we play it even without being quarantined.
It is one of the games that we enjoy in our free time as a family. Even relatives who live nearby come to play. You can’t imagine the memories that are kept of these little, but very important moments.
Netflix or Amazon Prime Series.
On the contrary, if you want a calmer moment, but still spend time as a family, you can opt for the Netflix or Amazon Prime series. Both offer endless series and movies for all tastes and ages.
Recently, I finished watching the West Wing series, which is about how complicated the world of politics unfolds within the White House. But, if yours is not politics or anything about these topics, you can still find series of all kinds.
The idea is that you turn your living room into a cinema. Why not? Even with popcorn and the whole thing. If you are not a member of these platforms, you can take advantage and enroll in Netflix or Amazon Prime
Cooking as family
Other activities that you can do as a family, is cooking. I know that many don’t like this task, but if you try new dishes you can enjoy it in the same way. Those who don’t know how to cook, it’s a good opportunity to learn using the various cookbooks available or Pinterest.
Similarly, there are many online sites that offer various cooking recipes for all tastes. You can even choose the type of food you like. Whether Italian, Mexican or international food.
Writing while quarantined
One of the things that psychologists and mental health experts recommend is to write. Take everything we feel out. This is a time where all the feelings and emotions are on the surface. Anxiety or panic attacks skyrocket to very high numbers.
Thus, nothing better than taking a calm moment to sit down and write everything you feel. You can put into writing your fears, frustrations, worries and wishes. You can’t imagine how therapeutic it is. Besides that you can see things differently.
Likewise, you can write a diary where you capture your day-to-day and the way you and your family cope with this difficult moment. This can help you in the future to face any other adversity.
If you were thinking about starting a skin care routine and you couldn’t find the time for it, take advantage of this quarantine. You can take this time to pamper yourself and clear your mind.

As you can see, these are some of the activities you can do in while quarantined. There are many others, especially in terms of family activities. But, these are the most common.
I wish with all my heart that this tragedy that overwhelms us all, doesn’t touch your home. May we come out of this nightmare soon and be able to return safely to our daily routine.
